How to Choose the Right Baby Blanket for a Newborn

A newborn baby's skin is about five times thinner than an adult's. Because this delicate skin barrier is still maturing, it is particularly susceptible to friction and heat buildup. Synthetic textiles tend to trap body heat and moisture against the body, which can lead to overheating. Natural cotton fibers allow continuous air circulation, making them the preferred choice for newborn textiles.

At our atelier, the fabric that rests against the baby's skin is always natural cotton: four-layer cotton muslin, combed cotton jersey, cotton sateen, or poplin. Four-layer cotton muslin is particularly practical for daily nursery use. Parents sometimes assume muslin is strictly a thin summer fabric, but a four-layer weave is not thin. It provides substantial substance and warmth, which is why parents buy and use it during winter months as well as warmer seasons. We keep our cotton in natural ecru tones rather than bleaching the fabric to an optical white.

While natural cotton rests directly against your baby, certain winter items require specialized insulation. Our winter blanket features four-layer cotton muslin on the outer side and soft wellsoft fleece on its inner side to provide extra warmth in colder conditions. Similarly, our sleep-set quilts, decorative pillows, and name pillows are filled with fiber filling to maintain their structure.

Everyday Blanket Sizing and Nursery Dimensions

A baby blanket must be large enough to wrap a baby securely without leaving unmanageable bundles of excess fabric. Through our daily sewing work, we find that our standard blanket size of 35.4 × 35.4 in (90 × 90 cm) provides the most balanced proportion for everyday handling.

This square cut folds evenly on the diagonal, creating a neat swaddle that fits into strollers, bassinets, and car seats without dragging across floors or catching in wheels. To help parents coordinate their nursery linens, we maintain standardized measurements across our cut-and-sewn pieces:

When parents prepare a full crib setup, bedding sets are sewn to the crib's measurements in muslin, poplin, or cotton sateen. We offer three specific bedding configurations depending on your climate:

• Sleep set: Features a quilt made with its own fiber filling, with a quilt cover that closes with a zip at the bottom.
• Winter set: Features a four-layer muslin outer paired with a wellsoft fleece blanket inside.
• Piqué set: Includes a lightweight muslin coverlet, a fitted sheet, a pillow, and a decorative pillow.

Both name pillows and decorative pillows arrive already filled with fiber filling, ready to place in the nursery.

Washing and Fabric Care for Four-Layer Muslin

Newborn linens require frequent laundering. Four-layer muslin softens with every wash, but following specific care steps preserves its shape and weave.

Always wash your blanket before its first use. Wash it separately on a 30 °C delicate cycle using a mild detergent. Avoid bleach entirely, as harsh chemicals degrade cotton fibers. When the wash cycle finishes, do not wring the fabric hard. Dry the blanket flat or run it on a low tumble setting.

After washing, four-layer muslin naturally takes on a soft crinkled texture and turns slightly lighter in shade. This crinkling and subtle color shift belong to the natural character of the textile and enhance its surface loft. If a loose thread ever gets caught or pulled during daily handling, do not snip it. Simply wash the blanket according to instructions; the open weave naturally settles back into place during the wash.

Because every item is cut individually, no two sets leaving our sewing tables are identical.

Personalized items cannot be returned due to their custom nature. However, if there is ever any production or shipping fault, we remake and replace the piece free of charge.

Production Timing for Your Registry and Hospital Bag

Because we do not store mass-produced, pre-sewn stock, every blanket, coming-home set, bath set, stroller cover, play mat, bootie pair, and nursing cover requires dedicated production time.

Preparation takes 25 to 30 days in our atelier, as every piece is cut, embroidered, sewn, and checked individually after the order is received. Once finished, orders ship free worldwide with a dedicated tracking number.
