Newborn blanket sizes explained — in centimetres and inches

Blanket sizes are one of the more confusing parts of shopping for a newborn, especially across borders. One shop quotes centimetres, another inches, and neither explains what the number actually does.

Here is the practical version.

Our blanket: 90×90 cm, roughly 35×35 inches

That is a square, and the square shape matters as much as the size.

A square blanket swaddles cleanly: you can fold one corner down, wrap each side across and tuck. A rectangle fights you at the corners.

At 90 cm, it is large enough to wrap a newborn with a comfortable overlap, and to drape across a car seat or stroller without trailing on the ground. We arrived at this size by making others and listening — smaller ones came up short in a swaddle, larger ones dragged.

What the other common sizes are for

Smaller squares, around 70×70 cm (28×28 in), are usually intended as a lightweight cover or a stroller blanket rather than a swaddle. They are useful, just not for wrapping.

Larger rectangles, from about 100×120 cm (40×47 in), are crib or crib blankets. They are meant to lie flat over a mattress, not to be wrapped around a baby.

So if a listing does not say what the blanket is *for*, the dimensions will tell you.

Fabric changes how a size behaves

The same 90×90 cm in different fabrics gives you a different blanket.

Four-layer muslin drapes softly and folds down small, which makes it easy to keep in a changing bag. It breathes well, so it suits warm weather and warm rooms.

Cotton interlock is denser. At the same dimensions it feels more substantial and holds warmth, which is what you want for a winter baby.

Waffle piqué sits in between: light, but with volume from its honeycomb texture.

A note on muslin and washing

Muslin relaxes with washing. A brand-new muslin blanket feels slightly crisp and gets softer every time it goes through the machine. This is normal and it is one of the reasons muslin is so widely used for babies — the fabric improves under exactly the conditions a newborn creates.

You may also see a pulled thread from time to time. That is the weave, not a defect, and it usually settles after a wash.

For bedding, we also sew to your own measurements. Duvet and quilt covers can be made to size — send us the dimensions of your crib and we will work to them.

Stroller mattresses and sheets are the exception: those are cut to a standard size, so if your stroller is an unusual model, measure before ordering.
