How to wash and care for 4‑layer muslin so it gets softer every year

Why muslin gets softer

Our muslin is a blend of woven cotton (muslin) and soft jersey (penye). The four layers mean it starts out light, but each gentle wash loosens the fibers a bit more. That’s why you’ll notice the blanket feeling cozier after each rinse.

First wash – set the tone

• Turn the blanket inside out.
• Use a mild, enzyme‑free detergent. Harsh chemicals can strip the natural softness.
• Wash on a cold or warm cycle, never hotter than 30 °C (86 °F). The cotton fibers love a gentle temperature.

Drying – keep the fluff

Tumble dry on a low‑heat setting for no more than 20 minutes, or better yet, lay flat on a clean towel to air‑dry. If you choose the dryer, toss in a couple of clean tennis balls; they help lift the fabric without pounding it.

Storing between washes

Fold the blanket loosely, avoiding tight creases. A breathable cotton bag works well; a plastic bag will trap moisture and invite mildew.

Every few washes – a quick refresh

After three to five cycles, give the muslin a quick hand‑wash in lukewarm water with a tiny splash of white vinegar. The vinegar neutralises any detergent residue and restores the natural pH, keeping the fibers supple. Rinse well and let it air dry.

What to avoid

• No bleach. It weakens the cotton and can leave yellow spots.
• Skip fabric softeners. They coat the fibers and stop the blanket from breathing.
• Don’t iron. The heat can scorch the delicate weave; the muslin’s natural drape is fine as‑is.

Long‑term care tip

Because newborn skin is about five times thinner than adult skin, we always recommend muslin or penye over synthetics. Those natural fibers stay breathable, even after years of use. A blanket that’s been washed regularly will feel softer, not harsher, and will continue to protect delicate skin without irritating it.
