Baby registry: what actually gets used in the first month

A baby registry is a strange thing to build. You are shopping for a person you have not met, for a routine you have not lived yet, guided by lists written by people selling the items.

We have been sewing newborn sets for years, and we hear back from parents afterwards. This is the honest version of the list.

The pieces that earn their place

A romper with snaps along the legs and shoulders. This sounds like a small detail until three in the morning, when you realize you can change the baby without lifting them over their own head. Nurses in the hospital reach for the same design for exactly this reason.

A hat. Newborns lose a meaningful amount of heat through their head, and the first hours after birth are when temperature regulation is least settled.

Mittens. Newborn fingernails are far sharper than most people expect, and scratched cheeks in the first week are extremely common.

A blanket that is actually the right size. Ours are 90×90 cm — about 35×35 inches. That is not an arbitrary number: it is large enough to swaddle and to drape over a car seat, and small enough not to trail on the floor from a stroller.

Burp cloths and bibs. Almost everyone under-orders these. Whatever number feels sensible, the first week will use more.

The pieces that can wait

Stroller covers, play mats, bathrobe sets. All lovely, none urgent. Once you are home and know your own routine, you will make a better choice than you would today.

Fabric matters more than the item count

A newborn's skin is noticeably thinner than an adult's, which is why the fabric on the registry matters more than the length of the registry.

Four-layer muslin is our summer recommendation. It breathes, it does not trap heat, and it softens with every wash. Cotton interlock is the winter equivalent: thicker, warmer, holds its shape.

We also work with poplin and waffle piqué, mostly in pillow and coverlet groups.

One honest note about muslin: because of how it is woven, you will occasionally see a pulled thread. That is not a fault — it is the nature of the weave, and it usually settles after the first wash.

About sizing

Our sets are newborn size, made for the coming-home moment. We did produce a 0-3 month size for a while, and stopped: parents kept telling us the baby was swimming in it. For that first photograph, a garment that fits beats a garment with room to grow.

Personalization

Name embroidery is included at no extra cost. You choose the font — we send you the options before we start, because not every name sits well in every typeface. You choose the thread color too, and it can differ from piece to piece.

Three limits worth knowing early: mittens cannot go through the embroidery machine, names cannot sit behind snap fastenings, and when two names are stitched there is no room for an additional motif beneath them.

One last thing

Nothing ships from ready stock. Every piece is cut, sewn and embroidered after your order, which means there is a preparation time. If you are adding us to a registry, add us early rather than in the final weeks.
